F (2023)
Medium
Mixed media sculpture (school desk and chair, acrylic paint, erasers, ink)
F is a minimalist yet confrontational sculptural work that reimagines a classic student desk as a monument to failure. The surface is meticulously tiled with pink erasers, embedded into a blood-red field, forming the shape of the letter “F.” The stark symbolism of the failing grade—rendered with the very tools meant to correct—is both ironic and pointed.
The chair and frame are painted white, ruled like notebook paper with fine blue and red lines, evoking early writing lessons and disciplinary aesthetics. This work literalizes the anxiety of evaluation, the permanence of mistakes, and the quiet violence of grading systems. The erasers, symbols of correction and compliance, are now weaponized into an architectural form of shame.
Part of the Pedagogy series, F speaks to the reductive nature of assessment in Western education. It critiques how learning is often measured through punitive means, flattening students' complexity into rigid hierarchies of success and failure.
