Mirage Structures (2025)

Mirage Structures presents a digitally mirrored cityscape that transforms urban architecture into a surreal, symmetrical form. The photograph captures a towering building and highway sign—“South Las Vegas Blvd”—doubled and reflected until the image collapses into itself. This architectural manipulation creates a kaleidoscopic illusion that feels both futuristic and ancient, like a monument to artificial reality.

The symmetry draws attention to how cities are constructed to impress, direct, and contain. But in its doubled form, the structure becomes untrustworthy—part cathedral, part glitch. The teal sky and warm-toned shadows intensify the surreal mood, turning the familiar landscape into an alien artifact.

This work is part of Krystal Charlston’s Futurism series, which uses photographic manipulation to question how built environments influence our sense of space, power, and self. By mirroring and distorting urban images, Mirage Structures invites viewers to reflect on the psychological architecture of the city—how much of what we navigate is designed illusion.
